Grycia's Erde simple chair is multi-functional on different angles. They remind me of Jenga blocks - the game that teases gravity. To defy or double their original purpose, I used to build structures with them. They were nothing on their own but majestic when put together.

Frayn Yong's use of Graphite Lead creates architectural shapes that are close to my heart. I've always tried to reach the top of a spiderweb.

Enzo Mari's Sedici Animali and Sedici Pesci wooden puzzle challenges the child with uneasy forms, providing limitations that stretches the imaginations of children. He was interviewed in Apartamento #4, where he mentioned, "I wanted my toys to be freeing, not limiting, without putting dampers on the possibilities of play."

Sometimes we act a certain way to suit the personalities of our clothing which is why people would pay 100 bucks for a tee-shirt even if it looked like shit. In this case it is about how it makes you feel. Ok, so I admit watching this video to listen to Sasha Pivovarova's voice. But it sure proved to be 8 minutes well spent- a fashion show less on the glamour, more on its garments. The often annoying intention to wow us audience (unfortunately many often successful) is absent. If you have not heard your jacket tell you bedtime stories or rompers wishing they were less confused...

Anyway, notice how the setting looks unfinished, impromptu even but who cares when everyone looks like they are having a great time?

Hiatus

Sorry for the little updates. been trying to think of how to bring this site forward. It's been quite a ride, getting new jobs, managing our own finances, national service (for the guys) and graduation. I'm kinda sure we're over our heads with work. That's why the first thing to go was inevitably this site. Pretty much so that I've been wondering if it'll be a good idea to just close down this entire thing. I mean come on, there are TONS of other sites like ourpermanence, featuring many many many artists, and wonderful blogs with better css/html than ours. So how do we make this a special place?

As we graduate from our tertiary school lives, so has our schedules and pockets tightened. Maybe a little happiness coming our way is an art exhibition Steph, me and many of our friends are involved in. It's not going to be a great huge event, but something small for us graphic designers to appreciate the fundamentals of print medium. Righhttt here.

Adversities aside, ourpermanence will now go on a hiatus. I'm sure once in awhile, I'll be posting, but who knows? We'll be back full force some time soon, hopefully with some better way of showing information. And CSS. YES. Proper CSS.

Fleet Foxes & Pieter Bruegel

I am a big fan of Fleet Foxes. Haven't been able to get myself a physical copy yet, but I'll work on it after I get back from Bangkok. Or maybe just get one there. So of course we all are quite intrigued by the cover on the new album. Which turns out surprisingly to be a Bruegel piece. If you are unfamiliar with Bruegel, you can read more here. Basically he is one heck of a Netherlandish painter in his time, and I am in love with his maximalistic style; Tower Of Babel and The Fall Of The Rebel Angels are two of my favourites from him after looking about his works. The work on the CD Cover is called, "Netherlandish Proverbs".

"When you first see that painting it’s very bucolic, but when you look closer there’s all this really strange stuff going on, like dudes defecating coins into the river and people on fire, people carving a live sheep, this weird dude who looks like a tree root sitting around with a dog. There’s all this really weird stuff going on. I liked that the first impression is that it's just pretty, but then you realize that the scene is this weird chaos. I like that you can’t really take it for what it is, that your first impression of it is wrong."

A painting is sometimes a place of vent for an artist, be in subliminally or not. I find that when the more subtle a master can make his intended message be put across in a piece of work, the more enigmatic that work becomes. Which of course makes it beautiful. Behind Netherlandish Proverbs, Bruegel was examining Fleimish proverbs and translating them visually and literally. He brought a sense of mockery towards humanity and the tireless stupidity behind it through his work.

So I decided to examine this piece more thoroughly, and below you will find some queer points I picked out specifically. Though I am not trying to decipher the proverbs, (I am just not knowledgeable enough to), I just liked to highlight the oddity in some of these visuals. Some are really absurd, and other's just peculiar. I like to carefully inspect the work, and piece out what the artist might had been thinking at his time. It's sad that sometimes on the internet, we don't really give as much effort to inspect a piece of work as when it is being hung in a gallery. Obvious reasons aside, I have to thoroughly agree with Robin that like Fleet Foxes' songs and Bruegel's work, many things creatives create, are always somewhat more than what meets the eye.

Made my way down to the Singapore Polytechnic graduation show, Birth09 yesterday night to identify our future competitors, partners, enemies, friends, employers, employees, spouse and what not.

Amongst the many ideas presented across boards and booths, I had my eyes on the Cold Rock Integrated Campaign by Andrea Kuo.

Clever solution. Driving practical failures can now comfort themselves with ice-cream and something else to peel besides parking coupons. And of course everybody has one of those annoying fickle-minded friends.

The graduation show is happening until this Sunday at Marina Square Atrium. Keep a look out for a pillow book and Eugene Ling's work.

I was always intrigued by how book spines can stand against one another in the most mismatching manner to create really attractive "wallpapers" within a certain space. Tiny snippets of a person's character sneaks out within few words expressed with a typeface or some colours. They remind me of little windows into somebody's soul. We can tell an entire section in a library by merely glancing across book spines.

The story goes like this: a designer creates the personality of a publication, the reader buys it and it becomes some sort of a representation of his own identity. The reader's entire collection of books then come together to tell an untitled story. Whether he is a romantic at heart or a sci-fi geek- this is one of those rare moments when self-expression appears effortless. It is not so much about the shelves but what you put on it.

An interesting concept, UniversRevolved is - well, basically - revolving Univers' capital letters 360 degrees to create rather interesting 3D shapes. It creates a kickass typeface by itself that I wished I had thought about. Done by the Creative Director of Google CL, Ji Lee, whose personal portfolio is proving to be lighthearted and well done with every click of my mouse, you would be please to know that he is also speaking at The 99 Percent, a Behance Conference in April. If you're around the Big Apple NYC this coming mid-April, don't miss it out!

Forgotten Children

"This experimental series of blurred children portraits focuses on images of children as anonymous individuals. The final images are littered with common names of children rendered in “crayonAlphabet” color. The anonymity of these individuals is reflected in both the technique and the written text that is being used in each individual frame as a face without a name is only a fiction of an individual. One of the faces used in the series is a self portrait of myself as a child, rendered in the same style and with the same set of random common names, to appear similar in every to the other portraits, one portrait among the many.

The idea behind the unknown faces comes from my attempt to “fill” a lost childhood with fictional children that I might have known if I could only remember that time period of my life. The private color language used to spell out the several hundreds of names of these anonymous individuals, further distances the similarity of any real child from that of a pretend playmate. The names of these ghosts, like so much fiction, are written in the lost language of crayons from a forgotten youth."

By Christian Faur, one multi-talented artist. Forgotten Children is one of his most prominent works. This series is beautifully and painstakingly executed, and expresses so much in its entity.

As the vacations draw in, I'm beginning to take on a keen interest in painting and more basic forms of art, I'm not much of a painter - did paint for awhile a few years back, and I will definitely be quite interested in what comes out of my overly-used-on-illustrator/photoshop/indesign hands.

These are the works of William A. Bouguereau, a French painter born from 1825 - 1905. I stumbled across his works while gathering resources for my final year project, and was immediately drawn into pieces like 'Dante and Virgil in Hell' and 'Biblis'. Bouguereau has expert skills of realism painting, his works are filled with dynamic emotions and lighting, playing out the character's body angles beautifully. Look at the detail of each painting; how each character is animated and diverse, yet still plays with other subject matters to create a cohesive visual prose. What appalls me is the little reputation he is given for such talent.

I've never really been on the iphone bandwagon, but this is really too much. My Nokia is now incomparably pathetic beside this application:

Whatthefont.com, being so awesome as it already is, has recently released an iphone application that does what it is capable of: identifying fonts via captured images. It will instantly search for similarities in x-height, ascenders, descenders, cap heightand many other font similarities in shapes, curvature and form, then place it in comparison with its database of fonts, to try and identify the typeface.

It makes me seriously consider getting an itouch.

Don't make me hit the ground

Managed to squeeze this screening into my FYP schedule, was late nonetheless but there was no way i was gonna miss Hasisi Park's first film screening in Singapore. What more with a title like "New Pornographers", a film about sex and numbers- you get my drift.

Setting aside their tables and chairs, the night was packed cosy slurping beer on wood over at Casualpoet. The film profiled individuals and their thoughts on the issue at hand. It was informative for now i know the significance of owning a car, making friends with hairdressers and the importance of being 13 centimetres.

Hasisi Park is a photographer/film maker with a fun name to call. View the world in pieces, beautiful ones with days spent figuring out why chestnut trees smell familiar.

I enjoy simple work that has been well thought out be it over a cup of coffee or sketched out on a napkin. The idea silently incorporated is finally allowed a chance to speak for itself when the reader discovers it. Beauty has a lot more to tell when we find it ourselves.

DOTMOV Festival 2008

DOTMOV is a digital film festival organized by an online magazine "SHIFT", aiming to discover unknown talented creators and provide an opportunity to show their works. There's a total of 289 works from 37 countries this year, and excellent 23 works among them were selected by guest judges. All the selected works are also exposed on the website. This year's festival will take place in several cities in Japan and oversea during the whole month of November, 2008.

The Holy Mountain

There is nothing much like Alejandro Jodorowsky's works. The Holy Mountain basically is the sum of Jodorowsky's crazy thought process, his drug usage, the love for LSD usage back in his time, and his probable obsession with sex. I had gotten a copy over the weekend, and believe me, its not the kind of film you would want to be caught watching by your more conservative friends and family members.

The content is ultimately warped, with heavy religious connotations backed with alot of raunchy, animalistic and gory sub-plots. But more importantly, it is Jodorowsky's love for the most nonsensical of subjects placed in the most nonsensical of situations that ultimately made it so entertaining. I'm pretty sure I exhausted all the facial expressions I ever know throughout the entire movie. Most of them in a '?!' kind-of-way.

Another intriguing point is how Jodorowsky spent 15 year reconstructing the original form of the Tarot de Marseille, the original tarot card designs, to totally recreate an extension of our reality; combining ancient mystics, modern psychological analysis and just plain weed-crack action into many of his films. It is a psychedelic trip, no less.

If exploding frogs and face-eaten mock Jesuses aren't things you can stomach, I'd recommend you to give this a miss. But if you don't mind, it will sure give one whack of a good time.

Once in awhile, I like to look through a list of product design jaw-droppers. Though I'm sure guitars of various odd shapes and sizes have already shown up in the music industry, still I couldn't help but be amazed at the aesthetics of the blackbird. There is something stunning about the way its front matte black body is in total perfect contrast to the glossy back, how it is almost 40% smaller than most normal classical guitars, and of course how it would sit beautifully in any design studio as a work of art in itself.

I can't help but feel a little finger-itchy this holiday season. :)

Branding for a digital-development company.

We looked for a strong brand concept and a powerful visual universe.
The idea of humanizing the digital world led us to a concept looking for a comparison between the company’s activity and the natural world. “A mere drop of water separates a beam of light into a million colors. Digital nature”

Aside from the impeccable concept by 'NN'SS for Naturaleza Digital, these works are also beautiful to look at. I cannot imagine how much work it must've taken for these. Interesting concept by Irina Blok. I like how you are forced to use your imagination to depict what's on these blank canvases sprawled with helvetica. It's quite unconventional, for we're at an age where millions of images are readily-stocked at the back of our heads, too much information sometimes. And when we're provoked to think with just one line, the interaction between our thoughts and the work becomes truly an individualistic experience.

The new macbooks are out! Though from the apple website they do need some getting use to, I have been assured they look more gorgeous in real life than what we see it in value. Besides, so much engineering has gone into the process of these notebooks, it has been deemed one of the most advanced products Apple has ever created.

The most unique thing about these machines is the unibody - the entire case of the macbook's body - has been milled from a single solid piece of aluminum. These third gen macbook pros are really getting my hands itchy.

Other than the obvious retro-esque tone of Prager's works, there's something uniquely whimsical about his subjects and compositions. He seem effortless in creating scenes quite genuinely to be thought - personally - as something in-between a 70s flick and some childhood fairytale. Highly colourful, yet its contents open to suggestions of darker undertones.

It's happening island-wide, and this year's theme runs along as 'Wonder'... Dragging my cheapo ass along, i visited my favourite section in Borders today to kill some time. Kasino A4 was heartwarming like tea on a cold day. Issue #7 extends its branches to draw and welcome you into the family. As a magazine junkie, i enjoy every word that's well-written and thought out by editors in the one and only space they get to proclaim their say directly in every issue. However, look hard for the editor's note and you will find none in this issue. Instead, enter the world of the art director with his mother's love and words. Butt naked baby photos printed on non-coated, 50gsm, this issue smells like mum's cooking.

Biography of Lawrence Weiner - Guillaume Mojon

For a project initiated by the Werkplaats Typografie, Guillaume Mojon, transferred statements of Lawrence Weiner into type installations. He used the spaces of his workshop to make these works with found material like boxes, tape, spray et cetera. In this way he represented the meaning of Weiner’s seperate works. He documented the spacial translations in a series of 5 photographs.

Feed SA: Trolley

Feed SA is a charity dedicated to feeding disadvantaged people throughout South Africa. Despite the rapidly growing numbers of homeless and hungry people on the streets, more fortunate citizens tend to drive by and ignore them. They were briefed to help Feed SA target consumers more efficiently in order to increase contributions. They placed decals of hungry, begging street children at the bottem of supermarket shopping trolleys bearing the Feed SA website and the line. “See how easy feeding the hungry can be?”. Any food placed into the trolley appeared to be given to the child. Collection tins were also placed at the till points and bins for food contributions were positioned at exits. Their message was seen by hundreds of shoppers every day for the cost of a few decals, resulting in a marked increase in donations and a significant boost in website traffic.

Devin Blair - Park Story

Park Story was a photography exploration by Canadian photographer Devin Blair, following a man cruising for sex in an Israeli Park. Although it was staged, it explored the content of homosexual culture in Middle Eastern societies, and it's subtle hidden context. Devin Blair is currently based in London commercially, and works for a freelance photographer as an assistant in his spare time.

I have a feeling he will be grazing the pages of OP soon again.

Born into Brothels

A not so recent film by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski which subjects children of prostitutes- 8 in particular, of the red light district of Calcutta, India. Photographer Zana traveled not only to photograph but she provided these 8 kids with a medium to express themselves, to show the world their eyes when she provided them lessons, gave them point and shoot cameras and taught them composition. Appreciate the beauty of pure intentions, no gimmicks, just photography of their very own lives, the environment they live in, their grannies, each other, their butt naked brother. The overwhelming joy in just being able to point and shoot somehow managed to mask and minimize the hard lives they lead.

My favourite kid photographer being Gour, his sensitivity and his desire to do something despite living in a place where determination literally mean nothing.

Watch the film, listen to every word they say-
every child if given an opportunity, will shine.

Colours armed with subtle aggression, piano keys too cool for long fingers, a belt buckle and graphics on sweaters- think, the flying v. Music is more stylish than you think it is.

40 plus creatives were given the task to come up with posters for a cult, classic or obscure film. The works were then collated into an exhibition: Now Showing, paying homage to 70 years of film and poster design. These artists had no regulations or limits in visual display of typo or graphics, and could work as freely as they wanted. So it is clear as you can see, how each designer's style is somehow emanated into the piece of work they did.

These creatives include Mario Hugo, Iain Wright, Seripop, WayShapeForm, and many more.

If you don't already know, Arial has been always labeled the cheap imposer of Helvetica; its bogus counterpart, its fake cousin, its illegitimate child... okay. Anyway, in the recent years, people are beginning to question the authenticity and provenance of widely-used fonts such as Arial, Courier and Times New Roman. Some come from credible sources, but others are just mere marketable duplicates indirectly commissioned by Microsoft for usage on their text-editing platforms.

Most font designers create fonts that are visually inspired by other fonts, and even though Arial has been sourced with all its bad publicity. Helvetica was actually also based on another font; Akzidenz Grotesk. Watch the Helvetica movie!

The font-sensation that hit the western world in the 60s to early 70s, was definitely one to have been liable to many of its sub-creations. Recent copies like Coolvetica, Helvetica Neue have all been the rage in the commercial world. Which really brings us back to the fact that Helvetica has never really left its podium as the King Of Fonts since its creation in 1957.
